Phytoplankton importantly influence global biogeochemical cycles of numerous elements through their metabolic activities. The concept of plankton functional types (PFTs) attempts to simplify phytoplankton diversity by grouping phytoplankton species with similar biogeochemical functions. Here we analyse the realized ecological niches of five PFTs based on an extensive set of global phytoplankton observations of 135 taxonomic groups.
