Solar ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is known to negatively affect DNA and other biomolecules; many organisms have evolved physiological mitigation mechanisms and/or behavioral avoidance reactions. In a new book chapter, Rodrigo Gonçalves and Samuel Hylander reviewed what we know about the effects of UVR on marine copepods. UVR interacts with other biological and physical variables of the environment, and its indirect effects are likely to be more important than individual damage through direct sunlight exposure.
