New popular science article about mixotrophy and stolen chloroplasts by Lasse Tor Nielsen and Thomas Kiørboe
Today, Lasse Tor Nielsen and Thomas Kiørboe published a popular science article in the Danish newspaper Weekendavisen about mixotrophy and the theft of chloroplasts among marine plankton organisms. The article gives an introduction to mixotrophy, and tells of prey sensing and -capture in these blind microbes. It also tells the fascinating story of how some organisms manage to close in on the Holy Grail of self-sufficiency, phototrophy, by stealing and utilizing the chloroplasts of their prey.
