Thomas and Mie has published an article on sexual selection in zooplankton: 'Lækre lopper scorer bedst', and Nis has published one with the title "Fiskeyngel er fremtidens nytårstorsk", both in Aktuel Naturvidenskab vol 3, 2014.
Thomas and Mies article notes that sexual selection in the plankton has hitherto been underappreciated. However, their recent research has demonstrated that sexual selection at times can be so strong that a substantial fraction of the populations of copepods remains unfertilized and thus never contribute to the production of fish food in the ocean. It is often only a small fraction of the male and female copepods that account for the majority of the production of offspring in the ocean. Read the article here
Nis' article discusses new holistic ideas of fisheries management; the concept of "balanced harvesting" and how to manage fisheries in terms of both biology and economy. New research has shown that balanced harvesting can cause marginally higher total yields and less impact on the fish community, but the cost is that the catch is comprised of predominantly small fish. This in term influences the economy of the fishery, where larger individuals are often higher priced than small ones. The article can be read here
